Charles Johnston Obituary, Johnston III, age 79, of Currey Farms near Salem, West Virginia, peacefully passed away on June 16, 2026. Johnny’s life was marked by adventure, service, and a deep love for family, friends, and his community. Born July 3, 1946, Johnny was the son of the late Charles D. Johnston Jr. and Martha Southern Johnston. He is survived by his sisters, Joan Johnston Hart and Barbara Johnston Swisher, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
A proud graduate of Washington Irving High School (1964), Johnny continued his education at Gordon Military Academy in Georgia and Fairmont State University. His patriotism led him to serve in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, where he spent three years aboard the USS Ranger aircraft carrier, demonstrating his dedication to his country. Following his father’s passing, Johnny became president of the Samson Company, leading with integrity and dedication. Despite his business responsibilities, his adventurous spirit thrived. He traveled extensively around the world, embracing diverse cultures and experiences, and always sought new horizons.
Johnny’s talents extended beyond his business pursuits. He was a certified scuba diver and a gifted musician, self-taught on several stringed instruments. His lifelong passion for music saw him perform in a bluegrass band, and he enjoyed collecting musical instruments, stamps, coins, antiques, and war memorabilia. An outdoorsman at heart, Johnny found joy in hunting, fishing, skiing, horseback riding, and golf. His farm was a sanctuary where family and friends gathered to ride horses, explore nature, and enjoy the scenic countryside. His loyal dogs brought him immense happiness, and he often shared stories of his adventures with them.
Johnny was actively involved in his community. He was a member of the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, the Clarksburg Elks Lodge, a 32nd Degree Mason, and a longtime member of the Clarksburg Country Club. His support for West Virginia University athletics, especially Mountaineer football, was unwavering. Known for his adventurous spirit, generous nature, and keen intellect, Johnny lived life to the fullest. Whether sharing stories, playing music, traveling, or simply relaxing on his farm, his presence left a lasting impression.
A graveside service will be held at West Virginia National Cemetery, 42 Veterans Memorial Lane, Grafton, WV, on Monday, June 22, 2026, at 2:00 PM, with Father Christ Scott officiating. Full military honors will be rendered. A memorial service celebrating Johnny’s life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all who cared for Johnny throughout his life. His legacy of loyalty, adventure, and kindness will be forever treasured.
