Bill Mckenna Obituary, William P. “Bill” McKenna, 79, of Festus, passed away on June 27, 2026, after a courageous yearslong battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on August 29, 1946, in St. Louis, he was the son of J. Glennon and Mary McKenna. Raised in a family of ten, Bill’s compassionate spirit and dedication to community were evident throughout his life. A proud graduate of St. Louis University High School, Bill earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public administration from Southeast Missouri State University. His passion for service led him to a distinguished political career as a Democrat, serving six terms in the Missouri House of Representatives for the 102nd District from 1983 to 1993, and then representing the 22nd District in the Missouri Senate from 1993 to 1999. Notably, he served as president pro tem during the 89th General Assembly in 1997.
Beyond politics, Bill’s leadership extended to education and healthcare. He was president of Jefferson College in the early 2000s, served on the boards of Jefferson Memorial Hospital and Mercy Jefferson, and founded groups like the Coalition for Highway Safety and the Jefferson County Growth and Development Association. His unwavering commitment to Jefferson County was also demonstrated through his nearly two decades of delivering Meals on Wheels alongside his wife, Debbie. A man of deep faith, Bill was known for his integrity, kindness, humility, and compassion. He loved sharing stories, creating memories, and treasured time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, who called him “Shoosh.
” He leaves behind his wife Debbie; children Lisa (Glen) Hausler, Ryan (Nikki) McKenna, Jen (Ryan) Wieser, Janine (Chris) Hueter, and Joe Bell; ten grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and many siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Bill was preceded in death by his brothers Timothy and Brian. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 10, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Crystal City, with a reception to follow. Memorials may be made to the Caritas House of Festus via Catholic Charities. Arrangements are under the care of Vinyard Funeral Home in Festus. William McKenna’s legacy of service, faith, and kindness will forever be cherished.
