Accident NEWTON GROVE, N.C.: Sampson County Wrong-Way Crash Claims Three Lives On Interstate 40 Near Newton Grove

NEWTON GROVE, N.C. – Three individuals lost their lives and another sustained serious injuries following a wrong-way collision on Interstate 40 in Sampson County during the early morning hours of Saturday, according to information released by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Investigators reported that the crash occurred near Newton Grove when a Chevrolet Camaro allegedly entered the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 while traveling in the opposite direction. The vehicle subsequently collided head-on with a Honda Accord, resulting in a severe impact that led to a vehicle fire and prompted a large-scale emergency response.

Authorities have identified the deceased victims as Jonathan Toxtle Zacarias, 21, of Fayetteville; Gabriel Toxtle Zacarias, 20, of Fayetteville; and 14-year-old Beancy Rivas Flores. Officials confirmed that all three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Honda Accord survived the collision but suffered serious injuries and was transported by air ambulance to a regional medical facility for treatment. Law enforcement officials have not publicly released the individual’s identity pending notification of family members.

Members of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Preliminary inquiries are focused on determining how and why the Chevrolet Camaro entered the interstate traveling in the wrong direction, as well as whether factors such as impairment, excessive speed, or roadway conditions contributed to the incident.
